The following instruction are for our NEW Caps and Bases

1. Trim the pipe shaft slightly shorter than the height of the vertical span.

2. Place the cap and base on the shaft as illustrated and tape securely.

3. Stand the column in place and level it.

4. Secure the column with L-brackets and screws at the top and bottom.

5. Slide cap up the pvc pipe to the ceiling and draw pencil lines along the two opposite out side edges of the cap. Drop the cap back down the shaft. Take the two plastic L - brackets provided and fasten to the ceiling 5/8'' (10") and 1/2" (8" )inside the lines drawn. Make sure the perpendicular side of each bracket is facing away from the column shaft.
Slide the cap up and dry fit it to be sure it grips the L brackets. Next apply the ABS adhesive to the outside face of each L bracket and slide the cap up back into place. Hold the cap firmly to the ceiling for about 1 min. while the ABS adhesive sets up. ( Note: You may want to apply a small amount of construction adhesive on the edges of the cap and base for additional bonding)

6. Repeat the last procedure for the base, except fasten the L-brackets 1/8'' inside the lines drawn.

7. Repeat procedure for cap installation.

8. Use an alcohol based cleanser to thoroughly clean all dust, dirt, oil and grease off of the column, cap and base.

9. Prime with BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® 434 Interior/Exterior Oil-Based Primer or KILZ® Original Primer. Follow dry time directions for the primers, then topcoat with any BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® or BEHR EXPRESSIONS® topcoats or equivalent.

See below for split column instructions.

ASSEMBLY SUGGESTIONS FOR A SPLIT COLUMN

DRAW A LINE ON BOTH SIDES OF THE PIPE TO BE CUT. USE A CHALK LINE OR PENCIL LINE.

PIPE CAN BE CUT WITH A THIN, FINE BLADE ON A CIRCULAR OR TABLE SAW. (Fig. 1)

CUT CAPS & BASES WITH A BANSAW, HACKSAW, CIRCULAR OR TABLE SAW INTO HALVES. (Fig. 2)

IN ORDER TO JOIN THE TWO HALVES BACK TOGETHER YOU WILL NEED TO CUT PIECES FROM THE PIPE ENDS OF THE SAME SIZE DIAMETER PIPE THAT YOU ARE INSTALLING. (PIECE SIZE: APPROX. 6”wide X 10”tall) OVERLAP ABOUT THREE INCHES OF EACH PIECE BEHIND THE CUT EDGES OF HALF OF THE SPLIT COLUMN. (Fig. 3)

CLEAN THE LAP JOINT PIECES AND THE INSIDE OF THE PIPE HALVES WITH PVC CLEANER ALONG THE GLUING AREAS.

USE PVC GLUE ON HALF OF THE WIDTH OF THE CUT PIPE PIECES AND CLAMP INTO PLACE. BE SURE TO LEAVE THE UNGLUED HALF PROJECTING OUTSiDE OF THE COLUMN SHAFT TO FORM THE LAP JOINT. (LET GLUE CURE AS RECOMMENDED BY THE PVC GLUE MANUFACTURER.) (Fig. 3)

(NOTE: IF YOU HAVE AMPLE EXTRA PIPE, YOU CAN ALSO CUT LONGER OR FULL LENGTH PIECES OF PIPE FOR THE LAP JOINTS)

WHEN THE LAP JOINT PIECES ARE DRY THE TWO COLUMN HALVES CAN BE POSITIONED AROUND THE SUPPORT POST.

STAND IN PLACE BEFORE GLUING TO MAKE SURE THE TWO HALVES LINE UP PROPERLY.

TAPE OR CLAMP THE 2 HALVES TOGETHER "DRY" (WITHOUT GLUE) AND PRE DRILL HOLES ABOUT ONE INCH IN FROM THE LAP JOINT,AND ABOUT SIX INCHES APART FROM TOP TO BOTTOM OF PIPE.

THIS WILL HELP PULL THE COULMN ROUND AGAIN. YOU MAY WANT TO PUT EXTRA SCREWS FROM TOP TO BOTTOM IN ORDER TO HOLD THE WO HALVES FIRMLY TOGETHER. NOTE; THE SCREWS CAN BE REMOVED ONCE THE GLUE JOINTS ARE DRY. BY PUTTING THE COLUMN SHAFT TOGETHER DRY BEFORE GLUING YOU ARE ABLE TO CHECK YOUR ASSEMBLY ALIGNMENT.

AT THIS STAGE YOU MAY WISH TO INSTAL HALF OF THE CAP AND BASE. (Fig. 7)

WHEN GLUING "L" BRACKETS TO THE CAPS & BASES PLACE ONE HALF OF THE CAP OR BASE ON A FLAT SURFACE, AS SHOWN. (Fig. 4 & 5) PLACE THE ”L” BRACKET FLAT WITH THE PRE DRILLED HOLES FACING DOWN. LEAVE HALF OF THE BRACKET EXPOSED TO OVERLAP AND ATTACH THE SECOND HALF OF THE CAP OR BASE. MEASURE AND SET IN PLACE WITH GLUE AND SCREWS THE HALF CAP AND BASE NEXT TO THE POST TO BE COVERED. BE SURE TO MEASURE CAREFULLY, AS THE PIPE MUST EASILY SURROUND THE POST TO BE COVERED.

CLEAN THE LAP JOINT AND THE INSIDE OF THE COLUMN AREAS TO BE GLUED. COVER THE LAP JOINT SECTION WITH GLUE MAKING SURE THAT ALL SURFACE AREAS HAVE ENOUGH GLUE ON THEM FOR MAXIMUM ADHESION.

STAND THE TWO COLUMN HALVES INTO PLACE AND ASSEMBLE QUICKLY WITH SCREWS. SECURE WITH METAL “L” BRACKETS OR EQUIVALENT TOP AND BOTTOM. (Fig. 8)

POSITION THE SECOND HALF OF THE CAP OR BASE AND GLUE TO THE PLASIC “L”BRACKETS AS WELL AS ALONG THE CUT EDGES. TAPE IN PLACE UNTIL GLUE SETS. (Fig. 9)

WHEN YOU ARE SATISFIED THAT THE GLUE HAS SET, REMOVE SCREWS, SAND OFF THE PLASTIC FROM AROUND THE SCREW HOLES, FILL WITH BONDO OR GLAZING PUTTY, SAND, PRIME THEN PAINT. (Fig. 10)

NOTE. IF CAP AND BASE HALVES DO NOT LINE UP PERFECTLY, USE A SMALL PIECE OF WOOD, NAILED OR SCREWED INTO THE FLOOR OR CEILING TO PUSH THE FLARED PIECE INTO PLACE UNTIL THE GLUE HAS CURED.
